Look at world history, and you see a never-ending list of wars. Look especially at Europe’s history, and you see the continent that’s had the highest population density for the vast majority of written history, being split up into a patchwork of states. And if you think there’s a patchwork of states today, that’s nothing compared to, say, 1300 A.D. European history is non-stop war, until 1945. Now we’ve instead had a period of peace lasting 77 years, which is completely unprecented and unique. There’s two big reasons for that: NATO, and nukes. It works.
